Morpheus: This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

from the movie

“Red pill” or “Blue pill”
It might be one of the most widely quoted lines of all movies. The fundamental question of the film is the meaning of freedom. It is your free will to decide to live in a dream world or confront reality.

There is nothing wrong with living in a protected shell from what really is outside. Everyone constructs his or her own symbolic image (Ego) and projects it as a self. The symbolic image might be the fundamental mechanism to protect our minds from any noises from outside. But there is an instinct unique as a human – seeking the truth -. Free will might not be a blessing at all.

Neo: I thought it wasn’t real
Morpheus: Your mind makes it real
Neo: If you’re killed in the Matrix, you die here?
Morpheus: The body cannot live without the mind

from the movie

What is real? We are already just “brains in a vat.” We live with our sensations and thoughts. Does it mean we are only minds, and anything material is uncertain? The film lands on the middle ground – “The body cannot live without the mind.” The virtual life in the Matrix is not the second life inside a game. The Matrix is real. And the life in it is just as real.

Even with some cheesy lines and a sentimental mood, it is a movie with spectacular actions and special effects worth watching.
